This weekend was full of news.
The weekend started with new music, as usual. On Friday, Drake set the vibes, dropping a new song featuring Lil Durk. Young Dolph, Dave East, and others also released new music.
The heavy news weekend started with coronavirus updates. California officially became the first state to surpasses 600,000 cases.
News in sports headlined the weekend. The return of the NBA has been been the talk of the town. With the playoffs set the start today with the first game kicking off at 12:30, all eyes have been locked on the bubble in Orlando, Florida where the season is taking place. Highlight games from Dame Lillard, Devin Booker and others have brought constant excitement and breaking news throughout the weekend.
Sports news continued QB Justin Fields started a petition to immediately reinstate the Big Ten fall 2020 football season after the conference made the decision to postpone the season.
As the heavy news weekend ended, Northern California continued to battle wildfires and fire tornadoes as wildfire season gets off to a vicious start.

The tradition of new music Friday continued with new music from Drake and Lil Durk, Dave East, Young Dolph, Burna Boy, and more.
- On Friday, Champagne Papi, better known as Drake or Aubrey Graham, released a new single with Chicago rapper Lil Durk titled “Laugh Now Cry Later.” The official music video featured Odell Beckham, Kevin Durant, and Marshawn Lynch.
Drake is reportedly set to release a new album soon titled “Certifed Lover Boy”
- New York rapper Dave East dropped his 15-song project titled “Karma 3.”
He gained attention in 2014 with his eighth mixtape “Black Rose.”
- Young Dolph released a new album “Rich Slave.”
This week, I discovered new music from an artist I’ve never listened to before, Burna Boy. Burna Boy is a Nigeran singer and songwriter, who gained notoriety in 2012 after releasing the lead single “Life to Party.”
- This Friday, Burna Boy released a new project called “Twice As Tall.”
The Big Ten conference made the decision to postpone the season until the spring after medical advice and votes from presidents and chancellors of the conference. After Big Ten made the decision to postpone the 2020 season for safety reasons, Ohio State QB Justin Fields started a petition to immediately reinstate the 2020 football season.
In his petition, he states that players have the right to make their own decision in regard to playing or opting out of the fall season.
He went on to say, players believe:
..the safety protocols have been established and can be maintained to mitigate concerns of exposure to Covid 19.
Fields has gained support from people across the country, along with his teammates and other players in the conference who have publicly supported his petition. As if 9 am Monday morning, the petition has over 223,000 signatures.
California is known for its deadly wildfires, but the events this weekend were never seen before. On Saturday morning, a massive wildfire in California created columns of flames, similar to a tornado. As a result, forecasters issued a fire-tornado warning.
The wildfire reportedly started in the Tahoe National Forest near the border California joins with Nevada. The fire quickly grew 20,00 acres. It was 0% contained as of Sunday.
NBA Playoffs kick-off
NBA games resumed on July 30th in a bubble format, at the ESPN sports complex in Orlando Florida. Originally 22 teams returned, but now as they playoff games are set to start on August 17th, only 16 teams remain.

On Friday, California officially became the first state with more than 600,000 cases of the coronavirus. California surpassed that mark, recording 609,000 cases with more than 11,000 reported deaths. Despite record numbers, evidence points toward a decline in new surges and deaths in California, since the economy reopened in late April, early May.
More Than A Vote is a coalition created by athletes and artists to focus on systemic voter suppression in black communities and neighborhoods. The coalition was created by Lebron James after protests and riots intensified across the across amid the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
In recent weeks, More Than a Vote has been working to convert voting arenas and facilities to voting precincts. Since most sports arenas and facilities are available due to the pandemic, they are the perfect place to house voting precincts because they are large enough to allow for social distancing.
Many cities have jumped on board, including Atlanta, Chicago, Sacramento, and Charlotte. More Than a Vote recently announced the first MLB facility to join forces. The Los Angelos Dodgers plan to allow their stadium to be used as a voting precinct.
Formally the Washingston Redskins, then the Washingston Warriors, now the Washington Football Team made a historic announcement Monday morning, that former NFL RB Jason Wright will become the league’s first-ever black president.
The Washington Football team has made a lot of changes this offseason, including changing their name to the Washington Warriors before settling with their current name.
Jason Wight was originally by signed the San Francisco 49ers as a free agent. He also played with the Falcons, Browns and Cardinals before retiring.
He earned his MBA with honors from the University of Chicago Booth Shcool of Business, becoming a partner at McKinsey and Compay, a global strategy and management consulting firm.
The team made the announcement on Monday, making 38-year old Jason Wright the youngest current NFL president. They also announced that his daily duties will include operations, finance, sales, and marketing.
